CHT Study Groups – Registration Now Open

by | Feb 17, 2016

Lynn Smetko, CHT Study Groups Facilitator shares this news:

Contemporary Handweavers of Texas (CHT) is offering the opportunity to participate in two study groups: Color v. Structure and Interleaved Threadings. A Yahoo!Group has been set up for each study group; members can use it to communicate and share photos and files. The sample deadline for each is May 1, 2017. All of the details are in the latest CHT Newsletter. If you are a member of CHT and are interested in participating in either or both of these or learning more about them, please contact me. If you are not a member of CHT, you can join here: http://weavetexas.org/Membership.html.

The first study group, Color v. Structure, will explore how a weave structure (and the interlacement of warp and weft) impacts the appearance of color. Work with both neutral and bright colors, use either a twill, a lace weave, or a tied weave and see how you can control color with your chosen weave structure. Actual samples will be exchanged (3” x 3”), along with the weaving draft (WIF) and a brief discussion of the sample. This exchange will be limited to 25 participants and a waiting list will be kept. Members should use a loom with at least four shafts.

Color vs. Structure

The second study group, Interleaved Threadings, will explore interleaved threadings, a topic made popular by Marian Stubenitsky’s recently-published Weaving with Echo and Iris. Work with two or more interleaved threading design lines, either the same or different. An example of interleaved threading is when a warp end from design line A is threaded, followed by a warp end from design line B being threaded: ABABAB, etc. Members should use a loom with at least eight shafts. Members will weave only one large sample for the CHT Archives, but will share a write-up that includes the WIF draft file, photos of the sample and anything made from the fabric, and comments. This group is limited to 50 members and a waiting list will be kept.

Interleaved Threadings

I look forward to hearing from you. We have a lot to learn from each other!
