Two Workshops with Nicola Brown in Austin

by | Mar 19, 2015

imageAustin Fiber Artists and Artist Barbara Attwell are bringing internationally known Irish Felter Nicola Brown to teach 2 classes here in Austin. Nicola is a member of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland, FORM Designmade in Ireland, Feltmakers Ireland and Grima, she is currently joint custodian of international group Felt United with US felter Dawn Edwards. Nicola’s work is inspired by shapes from the natural world and the beauty of the rural Irish landscape.

imageDuring the first workshop we will learn a stress free way of creating nuno felt using the tumble dryer method. Because there is almost no rolling or rubbing involved, the workshop participants are free to concentrate on the design process, and will create a beautiful wrap or scarf. Once learned, this method can be used to also create clothing, yardage, and stunning interior accents.

imageIn the second workshop we will discover how to create three-dimensional vessels or coin purses using the resist method of felting. Participants are encouraged to bring a selection of their favorite stash and Nicola will help them design one off pieces with them.

In case you are not well versed in the world of wool, felting is the process of tangling wool with warm water, soap, and lots of rubbing and rolling into strong, resilient works of art (think hats). Wool is beautiful, colorful and organic, but ultimately its magic is in its power as shape-shifter. And……great fun in a primordial soup kind of way. Best of all there is no harm done to the sheep – all it gets is a haircut!
