Katazome is an ancient Japanese method of hand-dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a hand-cut stencil made from mulberry paper. This introductory workshop will include demos on how to cut stencils, make our own natural dyes and resist paste. We will be guided through the process of applying juice dyes and pigments (including indigo) onto silk and bast fiber fabrics. Antique and contemporary samples will be presented during the workshop to help participants understand the history and development of this versatile surface design process.
