Jean Pierre Larochette and Yael Lurie, world renowned tapestry weavers, are in Houston presenting a workshop! The guild has an autographed copy of their book now. During a slide presentation on Thursday night, the two talked about their current life as successful working artists and the road of simple living that brought them to this point. Larochette revealed that he can weave using any one of four looms around the world and he carries a work in progress as they travel on this book tour. More details of their life and work are here in this article on the American Tapestry Alliance website.
A detail of this tapestry:
With wonderful vintage black and white slides, he reminisced about the early days of their careers and the bright future he sees for Tapestry in America. Sadly he reflected on the demise of the Aubusson tradition in France. 2015 will be a banner year for tapestry exhibitions around the US.
The clear plexiglas backing on this tapestry was perfect for the shaped top and an amazing presentation device.
I’m regretting having overbooked myself this weekend so that I am missing out on this great opportunity. I may need to be in Denver in May 2015 to see the tapestry exhibition.
