About Us
Mission
CHH is an organization dedicated to the preservation and advancement of weaving, spinning, and related fiber arts through the exchange of ideas and knowledge.
History
CHH was founded in 1949 as a chapter of the Contemporary Handweavers of Texas. The state guild was formed to provide a common meeting ground for isolated weavers throughout the state. A monthly newsletter was started and an annual meeting was held in the Spring to showcase members’ work. Dues were set at $3.00. By 1974, the Houston Chapter had created its first newsletter. Many of the newsletters contained a handwoven or handspun sample created by one of the members. In 1987, a ‘name the newsletter’ contest was held, with the winning title of CHHit CHHat remaining so popular that it is still used today.
GENERAL MEETINGS
CHH meets the third Saturday of the month, August through May, at the Guild House. The meeting begins at 10:00 am, which includes a business meeting, show and tell, and a program. Refreshments are provided by the members on a rotating basis. On occasion, meetings are moved due to holidays or other events, so please check the calendar.
You’re invited! Guests may attend one general meeting before becoming a member. Welcome!
CLASSES &
WORKSHOPS
CHH offers classes on a variety fiber arts including weaving, spinning, dyeing, felting, and more. In addition, CHH hosts workshops by local and international fiber artists. These events are a wonderful way to learn a technique in-depth in a short period of time. Students emerge from classes and workshops refreshed with new skills and inspiration.
Try it, you’ll like it!
We’re a community.
STUDY GROUPS
Study groups are small groups focused on specific techniques or topics that meet regularly outside of the general monthly meeting. Study groups provide opportunities to learn, practice, and be inspired and are a great way to stay plugged in outside of general meetings.

VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is one of our major activities at CHH. We are non-profit, and education is our main goal. We strive to educate ourselves and the community about our craft by sharing at meetings and programs, teaching classes, and hosting workshops. In addition, through volunteering at community events, we support Texas fiber growers, local historical societies, and others. We teach children about the fiber arts through volunteering at schools, libraries, and church events.
Our organization is also 100% run by volunteers. When we say “it takes a village”, we mean it!
